In 2014, Miura retired one of its most popular putters ever, the KM 350 (Small Blade Putter). Since that time, master clubmaker Katsuhiro Miura has been busy designing the next generation of this classic. Like all Miura products, there had to be an improvement on the original design or it wouldn’t make it to the production stage.

Enter the KM 008, which has a suggested retail price of $450. Like its predecessor, the KM 008 is forged from a single billet of soft carbon steel. The Miura forging process creates the industry’s tightest grain structure, with similarly tight manufacturing tolerances.

“The CB57 design was percolating in the minds of the Miura family for some time,” said Adam Barr, president of Miura Golf. “We were anxious for it to be ready, but it has a lot of technology in that beautiful forged package. So the Miuras wanted to make sure it was absolutely right before we released it. Now, we feel confident we can meet demand in a limited edition.”

The Series 1957 line of Miura clubs, which includes the famous Small (or “Baby”) Blade and the K-Grind wedges, is a special class of Miura distinction, reserved for the most favored designs of the company. While all Miura clubs are of the highest quality, those bearing the Series 1957 crest are considered benchmarks in the history of the company and the career of founder Katsuhiro Miura. He began his career in golf club building and design in 1957 at the age of 16, as an apprentice in central Japan.

The CB57 head features a medium-sized cavity and a progressively sized weight bar to provide the benefits of perimeter weighting and solidity behind the hitting area. Still, the cavity is not so big as to interfere with the forged look and feel, especially from the address position. The weight bar keeps the center of gravity low, and changes size club-to-club as needed to position the CG not just down, but exactly where it needs to be.

The clean, narrow top line is Miura all the way. The sole of the club incorporates the decades of lessons Miura has learned from watching and talking to golfers, resulting in efficient, powerful turf interaction and the best chance of a square face at impact. The overall size of the head is a bit smaller than Miura’s successful CB-501 cavity back iron.

The CB57 will be available in limited quantities at first, like other clubs in the Series 1957 line. Suggested retail per fitted & built club will be $275, perhaps higher if certain shafts are used.

“We’re a closely held company, so we don’t release exact sales numbers. But we’re pleased at the reception golfers have given the MB001,” said Adam Barr, president of Miura Golf. “We don’t introduce clubs based on the calendar, but rather on the timetable of the Miura family. It’s gratifying to see that when the MB001 was ready, golfers were ready for it.”

The MB001’s chief refinement is its carefully shaped sole, the product of golfer and experience and suggestions since Miura’s last blade iron came out. The precise engineering, enhanced by Miura hand finishing in its one and only factory in Himeji, Japan, yields a leading edge and overall sole shape that gets through the turf efficiently. Besides creating consistent divots as evidence of a well-struck ball, the reinvigorated sole helps golfers keep the club face angle constant all the way through impact. The result: the desired trajectory, be it straight, drawn, or faded.

Early adopters of the MB001 confirm the results.

“Pretty much to a man, they say it’s the best ‘tournament’ blade Miura has ever made,” said Chip Usher of Usher Golf, a Miura authorized dealer and custom fitter in Savannah, Ga. “The sole especially gets a lot of attention. And the overall look is so crisp and clean.”

“[Players] love ’em,” said Frank Viola of Ace of Clubs, a Miura authorized dealer/fitter in Saugus, Mass., near Boston. “I’ve fitted and built sets for customers with a number of different shaft models, and the MB001 works well with all of them.”

Dealers — and their customers — are also intrigued by the mixed-set possibilities of the MB001. For instance, some customers are considering trying the MB001 in shorter irons and going with a Miura cavity back design, like the CB-501, for the longer clubs.
